I’m obsessed with any & all people who go off on true adventures. I love reading about people who leave everything behind to truly explore the world or themselves or both. &, of course, as a photographer myself I especially love when adventures are captured beautifully.
It’s not that you have to share your adventure in order for it to be meaningful, but it does add to my personal enjoyment of your adventure. 😉
Given these facts, it’s no surprise that I’m totally in love with Chris Burkard’s gorgeous photography & his adventure, with surfer Eric Soderquist, along the entire US West Coast from a few years ago.
They surfed & photographed in every county along the way, including on the beach right outside my house. It’s funny imagining it, but it’s quite possible that I drove past their van or stood on the sand & watched them catch waves.
Besides being a very classic sort of adventure along the coastline that I adore & call home, their adventure speaks to me because of their mode of transportation. I’m kind of in love with their little adventuremobile, the pop up van that they called home for the journey. It seems like such a silly & fun thing to drive & I love how much it was a third partner in their trip, calling many of the shots itself.
When I met Chris & Eric at Sunset Magazine’s Savor the Central Coast event last month & heard them speak about their adventure, it solidified my love of this book & their trip. It’s a gorgeous multi spread book that tells their story mostly through stunning surf & California photos, but it’s also accompanied by handwritten notes that tell some of the funny & wonderful stories from their adventures.
It’s really lovely: an ode to California, to surfing, & to adventure, all rolled into one.
