People always say you fall in love with Spain during your first visit. I didn’t know what it meant, really. I fell in love with Italians. I fell in love with the mountains in Switzerland. I fell in love with Paris. But there is just *something* about Spain. Sam thinks it’s his favorite place & while I can’t say that (every place is my favorite place, when I think about this trip), I can tell you that the rumors are true: Spain is a place that you fall in love with & then never stop loving. There is magic in the air, here. Pure magic.
We headed to Barcelona first, but I’m blogging Granada first. It’s not out of any preference as Barcelona was absolutely freaking amazing, but because take a look at this view & tell me it’s not perfect. That, & I edited these photos two days ago on the train.
The white is amazing. Remember Cinque Terre & how all the little buildings were a million different colors? It strikes me as so Italian now because you get to Spain & all of a sudden BOOM, white everywhere. It’s breathtaking in its simplicity, you know?
It’s also spring here, so contrast all the white cobblestoned streets with the flowers & you have this feeling of walking through a dream wherever you go.
It feels so romantic.
We wandered the city streets in Granada, just enjoying the sunshine & looking around. It feels like summer here, with the hot sunshine & everybody out enjoying the weather. Tapas & sangria was made for enjoying in the summer sunshine, ya know?
These fried peppers are the best. Served here with rock salt, you can find them at a ton of tapas bars in Spain. SO. GOOD. I can’t even explain. Not too spicy, but packed with flavor. Please do try.
In other news, I have convinced Sam to try olives & pickles. While he has previously been seriously convinced that he hates the snacks in question, I’m happy to report that he’s coming around & may possibly even like them. Spain can do that to a person.
We wandered into the Granada University Botanical Gardens one of our afternoons. It’s free, which is my favorite thing on a long trip like this (hah!) & it’s not too big. More than just a plaza with plants, it’s the perfect little spot to explore & hang out. A secret garden, if you will. If you’re in Granada, set aside an hour to enjoy a picnic here, okay?
My absolute favorite thing about Spain though has definitely been the PATTERNS. The TILES. The COLOR. It’s amazing how amidst all the white, there are these pops of art & color in the form of tiles. So pretty; I’ve been trying to take as many photos as I can so I can make an image mural or use them as a backdrop or something else to that intent. We didn’t see the trend in Barcelona as much, but the second we got to the South of Spain it was apparent everywhere. (Here’s another one I loved, in Ronda.)
I’ll report back on whether I see the same trend in Madrid, too. We’ll be there in a few days. It’s insane to me because that’s actually the LAST STOP on my three month tour to Africa & Europe. How did the time fly so quickly?! Somebody take me out of this time warp, please. 😉
