Today was a lovely, sunshine-y, summer-y feeling day in Oakland. Okay, maybe not quite summer, but still. I wore a light sweater and a skirt and sunglasses and it just felt right. Spring time in California, I suppose!
Maybe it was just the neighborhood showing off for friends visiting in from out of town. I’d never met Brian in person before, but he was headed out to the Bay Area and I was excited to finally become friends in real life. (Isn’t it weird that that’s a thing now? 100 years ago, that sentence would have made actually zero sense.)
We met up in Temescal, one of the new and super trendy parts of Oakland. It feels like only a few years ago that it was just Bakesale Betty’s there, but about three years ago these old horse stables (where Blue Bottle was launched, actually!) were renovated and a bunch of cute little shops popped up.
My personal favorite was Book / Shop. I’m a big reader and pretty much love all book shops, but this one was definitely special. It’s a really pretty combo between a decor/designer’s dream space and a reader’s dream, too.
Pretty hipster, but definitely worth popping into, for sure for sure. The whole area around there is very gentrified these days and very cute.
This is my friend Elaine of Local Wanderer looking cute in the shop. So glad I got to meet her, too! Girl is doing big things and it was fun to chat travel. 🙂
I mean, come on, how cute is this place?! So cute is the answer. Good bookshops make life good.
Hey Brian, hey!
After wandering around Temescal for a bit, we headed over to the VSCO offices in Downtown Oakland. I’ve been a VSCO user since pretty much the day they launched (long before the apps came out!) and it was a lot of fun to see their new space, meet some of the team members, and wander through the beautiful space. There are a lot of really beautiful office spaces in the Bay Area and this space, albeit half of it being under construction, is definitely one of them.
They call this spot the “magic corner” because the light is always perfect and it gets photographed a ton. The whole office is beautiful, but this is definitely magic right here.
It’s really all in the details, folks! 🙂
I snapped this image on somebody’s desk. How cute! Love that broken eggshell terrarium and the cat mug for the air plant is totally perfect. Desks always need something pretty to spruce them up!
After a (quiet! people are working! ) tour of the VSCO offices, we wandered around Downtown Oakland for a little photo walk and just to hang out with the social media team from VSCO. Super cool people from the company plus my friends from out of town, plus a few random local Oaklanders who wondered what we were doing = a great time in the sunshine.
We paused for coffee just around the corner at this cute place called Coloso. It’s not huge inside, but it’s your usual cute little hipster place and the folks who ordered say the coffee was delish.
This vintage brass trumpet with airplants being all cute was probably my favorite part of the decor. Love!
Here’s a quick portrait in front of an Oakland parking garage of my friend Jonathan. We pretty much hit it off right away and are now bifls. Right Jonathan? RIGHT? haha. Friends of friends are (also) the best. <3
Hey Oakland, hey! It was fun wandering around Temescal and then Downtown Oakland. This whole entire area (and by area I literally mean the Bay Area in this moment) is gentrifying at such a fast past that it’s actually mind blowing.
Part of me loves it. I love cute places and people who are doing handmade, artisan, with thought things. Part of me really worries about the Oakland that I grew up in and the diversity that having all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds, economic and otherwise, really creates. Diversity is what makes Oakland cool. I hope the hipster side of that doesn’t ruin it, ya know? I say this right after displaying only only only photos of hipster Oakland on my feed; the irony is not lost on me, don’t worry. (But I’m worrying.)
Closing with a photo of bougainvillea which is, absolutely, my favorite plant. It’s the only bloom that comes in piles and piles, ya know?
Happy weekending, friends! I hope your Friday is fabulous and your weekend even better.
p.s. Here’s a photo of a chicken crossing the road in the non-hipster part of Oakland. I love being from here.
